Legislative Background

The environmental impacts of Energy-using Products (EuP) take various forms, such as energy consumption and related contribution to climate change, consumption of materials and natural resources, waste generation and release of hazardous substances.

The Council and the European Parliament therefore with the aim to reduce the environmental impact of EuP and contribute to sustainable development adopted a Commission proposal for a Directive on establishing a framework for setting Ecodesign requirements for all Energy-using Products.

The Directive does not introduce directly binding requirements for specific products, but does define conditions and criteria for setting, through subsequent implementing measures, requirements regarding environmentally relevant product characteristics and allows them to be improved quickly and efficiently.
